CHARLY NIJENSOHN
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nijensohn moved to Berlin in 2002 where he currently lives and works. A figurehead of Latin-American video art, he was one of the founders of the experimental art company Ar Detroy and La organización negra, a theatre movement founded on the sensorial stimulation of the audience. This founding experience determined his work, which both in video and photographic mediums has seemingly been inspired by performance acts.
Nijensohn received the Antorchas Foundation Award in 1997 and the Konex Platinum Award in 2002. The following year he presented Travel to nowhere at the 50th Venice Biennale. In 2006, invited by the Uppernavik Museum, Nijensohn travelled through the North Pole filming Beyond the End and two years later he directed the The Wreck of Men in the Salar the Uyunin in Bolivia. During 2009 he was in Amazonia for several months recording Dead Forest.
For Night of Festivals 2010, Charly presents – an exploration of how identity is relinquished when humans are stripped bare of their beliefs and traditions:
Humans lost in the immensity of the horizon, enduring the inclemency of nature. Away from all beliefs
and exposed to the erosion of time
they vanish into the emptiness. In silence and isolation
they are testimony of an existence
that becomes a declaration of principles.
El naufragio de los hombres is directed by Charly Nijensohnin in collaboration with Juan Pablo Ferlat & Teresa Pereda, Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia 2008.
