FERNANDO VELAQUEZ

A Uruguayan, Fernando Veláquez lives and works in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His work investigates notions of privacy, monitoring and control in relation to the individual’s sense of self, working across a range of media including video performance and installation. Fernando has participated in a wide number of solo and group exhibitions including Thessaloniki and Mercosul Biennial (2009) and The Pocket Film Festival at Centre Pompidou (2007). He was honored with the “Artificial Life 11.0 artistic production incentives” and “2008 Culture” prizes, both in Spain and the “Sergio Motta” art and technology prize in Brazil (2009). He holds a PhD from the Communication and Semiotic Department of PUC University (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and an MA in Fashion, Art and Culture from Senac University (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
For Night of Festivals 2010, Fernando presents We self-portrait – part of a series of studies investigating the condition of the self. Spread and amplified in the networks that blur the boundaries between public and private, between the self and the other and caught in the flow of the networked city “we are many” and the self is vanquished. Edited in real-time, the movie focuses on the “aesthetics of noise”, paradoxically appealing and chaotic as the pitfalls of the society of spectacle.
