PARAISO SCHOOL OF SAMBA
Paraíso School of Samba is the foremost samba troupe outside of Rio and is the only organisation in the UK whose artistic direction is by artists who grew up in the Rio de Janeiro samba community. Like Brazilian Samba Schools, Paraíso play only pure samba, rather than the derivatives usually played in the UK, interweaving percussion, music, dance, costume and float design into their spectacular performances.
For Night of Festivals 2010, Paraiso are working closely with Mandinga Arts to choreograph the carnival procession which will parade the city streets of Nottingham on the second evening of the Festival.
Henrique da Silva is President & Carnavalesco of Paraiso. He is the UK’s most accomplished samba dancer, teacher and carnavalesco. Henrique grew up in Mangueria and returns to Rio each year for Carnival, as a permanent Passista in Mangueira.
