ArtReach has announced an innovative new film commission from international composer and film-maker, Michael Nyman, to be given its world premiere screening on the opening night of Night of Festivals 2012 on Thursday 21 June. The free screening of Witnesses will be presented on the Big Screen in Old Market Square, Nottingham, and will be introduced live by Michael Nyman. Subsequently the film will be shown on a loop in The Space at Nottingham Contemporary throughout 22 and 23 June.
Witnesses is inspired by Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca’s play Blood Wedding, with both Lorca’s life story and the events of the play hugely relevant to the themes of Night of Festivals.
The commission follows a previous Nyman work created for ArtReach in 2010. Cine-Opera (pictured above) was a new short film exploring a semi-derelict historic cinema in Mexico City and since Night of Festivals 2010 has been screened in different locations and at different events around the world.
Michael Nyman is well known for the many film scores he wrote during his lengthy collaboration with film maker Peter Greenaway and his multi-platinum sound track album to Jane Campion’s The Piano. His operas include The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat and Letters, Riddles and Writs, and he has written six concerti, four string quartets and many other chamber works, many for his Michael Nyman Band with whom he tours as a performing pianist. Nyman has recently had huge success with his reinterpretation of Vertov’s silent film masterpiece Man with a Movie camera, performing his work at the Barbican Concert Hall, the Berlin Film Festival and at MoMA in New York.
